Twenty Years, One Bottle: Bluecoat Gin's Spirit Journey Comes Home

Twenty years ago, in a stretch of Northeast Philadelphia that most people wouldn't have pegged as the birthplace of an American spirits revolution, a small distillery started doing something different. That distillery was Philadelphia Distilling, and the gin it built its name on — Bluecoat American Dry Gin — didn't just add another bottle to the back bar. It changed what American gin could be.

This summer, we're celebrating that milestone the way it deserves: not with a single party in a single city, but with a journey.

What Is the Spirit Journey?

#Bluecoat20 is a multi-city celebration that takes the anniversary out of the distillery and into the bars, restaurants, and communities that have poured Bluecoat since the beginning — and the ones just discovering it now. From Fishtown, where it all started, to Rittenhouse, out to St. Louis, and up to New York City, the Spirit Journey connects every stop along the way with one shared story.

Each participating bar is pouring a cocktail made specifically for this moment — a drink that reflects both the spirit of Bluecoat and the character of the neighborhood it's served in. It's the same gin, told through dozens of different voices.

Why It Matters

Twenty years is a long time in an industry that moves fast. Bluecoat helped define the American gin category at a moment when most gin on shelves was imported and the "London Dry" style was the only real reference point. Philadelphia Distilling took a different approach from day one, and two decades later, that original bet has turned into a genuine legacy — one built city by city, bar by bar, pour by pour.

That's the idea behind the campaign hashtag #PhillyBornPouredEverywhere: the gin may have started in Philly, but its story now belongs to every city and every bar that's part of it.
